Water Rescue on the Susquehanna River
Tue. Jul 7th 2020

In the early evening of July 7, Hanover Township FD's Water Rescue Team was dispatched on the Primary Assignment to assist Plymouth Borough FD on the report of a person swimming in the river who went underwater but did not resurface. Upon arrival of Rescue Teams on location additional information was obtained that 2 juvenile victims were pulled underwater while swimming and have not resurfaced. Water Rescue crews from both Hanover Township and Plymouth Borough quickly deployed resources and rescue boats onto the river and also requested assistance from the Water Rescue unit from Wilkes Barre Bureau of Fire whom was already on the water in their jurisdiction for training exercises.  Several Rescue Dive teams from throughout Northeastern PA were called in to assist on the incident. Unfortunately shortly before 10 p.m... and after numerous hours of performing searches on the water with underwater camera's and sonar, dive and surface water teams recovered 2 males from the water who were pronounced deceased at the scene by the Luzerne County Coroner.

*** Please be aware that even though the Susquehanna River may look low and slow moving, it has a strong current and strong undercurrents that make this body of water not very suitable for recreational swimming, it is encouraged that if you are near the river or its banks that you bring along some type of flotation device whether it be a ring buoy or a life jacket for your safety***
